Il FEJJETON, uno shabbaton in Costa del Sol

Se è vero che alla terza volta un’usanza diventa una tradizione consolidata, allora la Federacion de Jovenes Judios de España (FEJJE, l’omologo spagnolo dell’UGEI) ha raggiunto un traguardo importantissimo. Per il terzo anno di fila è andato in scena il FEJJETON, un evento di 4 giorni con oltre 120 giovani ebrei da 11 paesi, che dopo secoli di assenza di vita ebraica nella penisola iberica, è diventato un punto di riferimento assoluto per la Comunità ebraica spagnola.
Nato nel 2023, come una joint venture mediterranea con le vicine UGEI e JYP (Jewish Youth of Portugal), FEJJETON è uno Shabbaton all’insegna della gioia e del senso di appartenenza, soprattutto in luoghi e in tempi in cui vivere ebraicamente non è affatto scontato. A partire dallo slogan, “Dance Must Go On!”, che, in riferimento agli attacchi terroristici di Hamas del 7 ottobre al NOVA Festival, sottolinea ancor di più la perseveranza e l’impegno per riprendere a ballare, gioire e festeggiare la propria identità.
Dopo la prima edizione a Madrid, la seconda in Costa Brava vicino Barcellona, questa volta è stato il turno di Malaga. Una Comunità più piccola rispetto alle città precedenti, ma che nell’ottica di espandere la capillarità delle attività dell’Unione, ha risposto con una grande partecipazione, attraendo persino giovani da Gibilterra e Melilla. Proprio in seno a questa visione, durante il weekend si è tenuta anche la canonica Assemblea Generale di FEJJE, che per la prima volta ha eletto un Vicepresidente per l’Andalusia, Miryam Anahory Bendahan, allargando concretamente la sua influenza territoriale. Oltre a lei, e la confermata Presidente Yael Sanchez, sono stati eletti la Vicepresidente per Madrid, Natalia Benzaquén, la Vicepresidente per la Catalogna, Lior Bar, il Segretario, Jorge Opalinski Romer, e il Tesoriere, Meir Mouyal.
Il resto del programma non è stato da meno in termini di intensità e coinvolgimento. Dallo spettacolare show di flamenco, alla lezione di Krav Maga guidata dal campione internazionale Patrick Bittan, ogni momento ha contribuito a rendere l’esperienza unica. Grande interesse hanno suscitato anche le sessioni con Hanna Martinez, project manager di WJC HO:PE, e il panel con Ron Stern e Hanna Veiler di EUJS e Moshe Lencer di AJC, fino all’incontro con il CEO della startup Mr. Noodles, Jacob Tureman, che hanno offerto spunti preziosi di riflessione e confronto. Passando, poi, per gite in spiaggia, relax in piscina e una fantastica festa a tema “Feria de Malaga”, la Costa del Sol ha regalato a tutti i partecipanti uno Shabbat indimenticabile.
Come sempre, dall’Italia è partita una delegazione di una decina di ragazzi, che tra uno spagnolo abbozzato e la solita simpatia, hanno contribuito a coltivare lo splendido rapporto con l’ebraismo spagnolo.

If it’s true that an event becomes a well-established tradition after the third time, then the Federación de Jóvenes Judíos de España (FEJJE, the Spanish counterpart of UGEI) has reached a major milestone. For the third year in a row, the FEJJETON took place—a four-day event with over 120 young Jews from 11 countries, which, after centuries of absence of Jewish life on the Iberian Peninsula, has become a key reference point for the Spanish Jewish community.
Launched in 2023 as a Mediterranean joint venture with neighboring UGEI and JYP (Jewish Youth of Portugal), FEJJETON is a Shabbaton filled with joy and a strong sense of belonging—especially in places and times where living a Jewish life is anything but taken for granted. Starting with its slogan, “Dance Must Go On!”, a reference to the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks at the NOVA Festival, the event emphasizes perseverance and the commitment to keep dancing, celebrating, and embracing Jewish identity.
After its first edition in Madrid and the second on the Costa Brava near Barcelona, this time the event was held in Málaga—a smaller community compared to previous cities, but one that, in the spirit of expanding the reach of the Union’s activities, responded with great participation, attracting even young people from Gibraltar and Melilla. In line with this vision, FEJJE also held its annual General Assembly during the weekend, where for the first time a Vice President for Andalusia, Miryam Anahory Bendahan, was elected—concretely expanding the organization’s territorial reach. Alongside her and re-elected President Yael Sanchez, other elected board members included Natalia Benzaquén as Vice President for Madrid, Lior Bar as Vice President for Catalonia, Jorge Opalinski Romer as Secretary, and Meir Mouyal as Treasurer.
The rest of the program was no less intense and engaging. From a spectacular flamenco show to a Krav Maga class led by international champion Patrick Bittan, every moment contributed to making the experience unforgettable. Equally engaging were sessions with Hanna Martinez, project manager of WJC HO:PE; a panel discussion with Ron Stern and Hanna Veiler from EUJS and Moshe Lencer from AJC; and a meeting with Jacob Tureman, CEO of the startup Mr. Noodles—all of which offered valuable insights and discussions.
There were also beach trips, poolside relaxation, and a fantastic themed party inspired by the “Feria de Málaga”—the Costa del Sol truly gifted all participants with an unforgettable Shabbat.
As always, a delegation of around ten young people came from Italy, who—with a bit of improvised Spanish and their usual charm—helped nurture the wonderful relationship with Spanish Jewry.
